Background

The Gil and Avis Ford Scholarship in Meteorology is named for an award winning NWS Cooperative Observer who, along with his wife's assistance, recorded weather observations at their West Burke home for over 68 years, without missing a day. They are well known in the area as unassuming folks of high integrity with a pleasant, helpful, and friendly disposition. The LSC Meteorology Department, students and faculty, especially Dr. Bruce Berryman, enjoyed a mutually respectful and beneficial relationship with Gil for over 20 years. In 2000 the department established the Gil Ford Award as the highest honor given to a graduating senior in meteorology. In 2002 Gil and Avis established a scholarship to help students achieve their meteorological dreams and realize their personal potential through study at LSC. Gil passed away in 2002.
