Education:

B.S. - Physics, University of Minnesota

M.S. - Atmospheric Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles

Ph.D. - Atmospheric Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles

Courses Taught: Survey of Meteorology, Thermodynamics, Physical Meteorology, Remote Sensing, Boundary Layer Meteorology, Mesoscale Meteorology
Professional Interests and Activities: Professor Atkins professional interests lie in the area research of Mesoscale phenomena and more specifically in the area of Severe Local Storms.  Current research efforts are focused on how bow echoes create surface wind damage.  In particular, we are looking at how mesovortices formed within bow echoes form and factors governing their intensity.  This work is being accomplished by analyzing high-resolution simulations of bow echoes produced by the WRF model.  We are also looking at how low-level stable layers affect bow echo surface wind damage potential.

Professor Atkins is also currently serving as an Editor for Monthly Weather Review.
