The North American Weather Modification Council (NAWMC) is pleased to announce it is seeking students in the science and engineering disciplines to apply for a scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year. The successful applicant will receive a stipend of $1,500 and up to $1,000 in travel reimbursement for attendance at a future meeting of the NAWMC during the academic year.

Applications and additional information can be found on the NAWMC website at www.nawmc.org. A scholarship announcement flyer is attached for posting in your department. If you have any questions, please contact Barry Lawrence, Chair, Scholarship Committee at barry.lawrence@wyo.gov.

The mission of the NAWMC is to advance the proper use of weather modification technologies through education, promotion and research. The NAWMC serves as a forum for the exchange of information on weather modification issues; to promote the effective use of these technologies to enhance precipitation, suppress damaging hail and mitigate fog; and to advance research and development activities to increase scientific knowledge about weather modification capabilities.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is pleased to announce the 2011 Student Summer Internship listings. We believe this is a great advantage for you. The listing provides employment and internship opportunities for students in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic science. The AMS strongly encourages students to view the listings we have available. The listings have already been initiated and will continue to be updated as more ads are received. Many of the ads are offered annually and will remain on the list year-round. I am providing a direct link to the Internship page for your convenience http://www.ametsoc.org/amsstudentinfo/internships.html.

Also, AMS offers the Student Travel Grant Program. Travel grants are available for senior undergraduate and graduate students to attend AMS meetings held in the U.S. or Canada. AMS recognizes the considerable benefit that students can gain from attending conferences even if they are not presenting a paper there. AMS wants to encourage interactions between students and other conference attendees. To this end, travel grants will be awarded to a student who is not presenting a paper at the conference. This program is available to AMS members only, including student members. A direct link has been provided for your convenience http://www.ametsoc.org/amsstudentinfo/stg_info.html.

Fall 2011 EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships For Undergraduate Environmental Study

    http://www.epa.gov/ncer/rfa/2011/2011_gro_undergrad.html

The short description is that it's an EPA fellowship that pays a tuition stipend for both the junior and senior year of college, as well as a paid internship at an EPA facility for 12 weeks during the summer between junior and senior year. That is a huge chunk of money and would be a great thing on a resume.

"The program focuses its efforts at stimulating and supporting interest in environmentally related research and development at institutions of higher education that receive limited federal funding, including in particular institutions with substantial minority enrollment (Environmental Career Organizations 2001)."

Are you a student interested in private sector meteorology?
Apply to the AMS Board of Private Sector Meteorology's Student Mentorship Program!

New energy economy, risk management, and climate change. Solar and wind energy forecasting, quantifying natural catastrophe risk, and modeling the climate. These are examples of current global issues - and typical job duties - that atmospheric scientists are tackling in the private sector.

For the last four years, the American Meteorological Society's Board for Private Sector Meteorologists (BPSM) has reached across private industry to connect a cross-section of professionals working in private sector positions related to meteorology with students interested in learning more about the private sector.

The highly successful program is structured to pair students with a mentor who is active in the private sector discipline of greatest interest to the student protege. Examples include - but are not limited to - energy forecasting, weather derivatives, broadcasting, and catastrophe risk management. Every attempt is also made to pair students with a mentor in the same geographic region to facilitate face-to-face interactions, in addition to regular phone calls, e-mails, and other forms of communication.

The mentorship program is seeking up to 30 senior-level undergraduate and graduate students who are focused on building a career in the private sector. This program is uniquely focused on skill development, coaching, and helping you grow your professional network and business acumen. This program will give students the skills necessary to stand out in the eyes of employers.

In order to ensure students have an opportunity to build a strong working relationship during the 2010/2011 academic year, we request that applications to join this mentorship program be submitted by September 30, 2010. Applications may be accepted later in the year; however, the number of mentors is limited so we encourage students to apply as soon as possible!

    Students can apply online: http://www.ametsoc.org/boardpges/bpsm/mentorstudentapp.html

For more information about the BPSM mentorship program, including student testimonials and mentor profiles, please visit http://www.ametsoc.org/boardpges/bpsm/mentorshipprogram.html, or contact BPSM@ametsoc.org.

Additionally, students who are applying for mentorship opportunities should also consider attending the AMS Annual Meeting in Seattle in January. The conference is a great place to network, including possibly meeting your mentor and/or other members of the BPSM.

The AMS offers one or more programs for helping to offset travel costs. To find out about these, ascertain if you are eligible and for directions on how to apply, visit the following AMS page:
