RASS (Radio Acoustic Sounding System) - Introduction

• RASS units are usually collocated with a profiler and are used in conjunction with the profiler to provide virtual temperature profiles (T_v) generally from 0.1-2.5 km AGL.  
• Three of the 404 MHz wind profilers in the Demonstration Network have a collocated RASS unit.
• These locations are at Platteville CO, Purcell OK, and White Sands, NM.  
• Many of the 915 MHz profilers also have collocated RASS units, as shown to the right -->
• So, how does the RASS unit give us virtual temperature?
