Summary

- Shortly after sunrise, when surface heating has become intense enough to
generate weak thermals, the convective mixed layer begins to grow
- Once the thermal reach the top of the nocturnal boundary layer, the
convective mixed layer rapidly grows as the thermals grow quickly up through
the residual layer. This occurs during mid morning.
That completes our discussion of the general structure and evolution of the
well-defined boundary layer over land.
- For review, let's draw vertical profiles of theta, mixing ratio, and wind
speed at each of the times labeled S1-S6 in the figure above.
- Practice identifying these layers in these
two soundings
- Now lets practice identifying boundary layers in soundings - Lab #1.
