Identification of long and short waves
Lab Objectives:
To learn how to pick out long and short waves in the atmospheric flow and how they move relative to each other
ASSIGNMENT:
Using GARP, plot the following 12Z AVN model data from yesterday:
500 mb heights (solid contours) and absolute vorticity (color filled starting at 16) valid at 00 hrs, 24hrs, and 48 hrs.
Save the above three images and invert them with GIMP.
Print out the three images. On the print outs, plot the positions of the long waves and short waves.
How many long waves are there?
How are the long waves moving?
Track the positions of two well-defined short waves. How fast are they moving? How are they moving relative to the long waves?
