SURVEY OF METEOROLOGY II LAB #5
Mid Latitude Cyclones - Vertical Structure and Vort Max Identification
Lab Objectives:
To examine the observed vertical structure of a mid latitude cyclone.
ASSIGNMENT:
Using GARP, plot the 18Z forecast data from the 00Z AVN model run for today. Zoom in on an area of surface low pressure and make the following plots:
500 mb heights, and absolute vorticity
850 mb heights winds, and temperature
surface pressure and precipitation
On the 500 mb chart, put an X at the location of the surface low. Is the mid latitude low tilted with height in a way that is favorable for further development?
on the 850 mb chart, circle and label areas of cold air and warm air advection. Are they in the locations you might expect relative to the short wave observed at 500 mb?
Superimpose the 12Z forecast 500mb absolute vorticity and heights on a 12Z water vapor image over the CONUS. Are the model vorticity maxima in the proper locations relative to the water vapor signature?
