SURVEY OF METEOROLOGY II LAB #1

Met Data, Software, and Hardware Refresher

Lab Objectives:

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Using the NMAP application, determine what satellite data types are found for each of the following:

What are the areas of coverage for the above choices?  The area of coverage should be given in latitude and longitude.

  2. Plot the 1km visible satellite image for 1515 UTC today over the area of the Northeast.  Superimpose surface data using the standard station model with temperature, dew point and pressure in the upper left, lower left, and upper right positions, respectively.  Do not plot any other data other than the winds (in knots) and sky coverage.  Make sure that the temperature is red, the dew point is green, and pressure is brown.  Also make sure the map background contains a latitude/longitude grid, every 10 degrees.  Also plot the NWS CWAs on the image.

  3. Now plot a water vapor image over the US at 1215 UTC today.  Superimpose the 300 mb heights and winds from the 00 UTC ETA model forecast from today.  Make sure the times match!

  4. Are there any watches or warnings over the US today?
