National Collegiate Weather Forecasting Contest – General Overview

The National Collegiate Weather Forecasting Contest (NCWFC), hosted by Penn State will begin for the 2005-2006 season in September.  This contest involves more than 1100 forecasters from many different schools across the country.  The forecasts involves forecasting a high and low temperature as well as a category of precipitation for a variety of cities across the country.  Each forecasting city lasts for two weeks, where forecasts are made Monday through Thursday nights.  This contests runs through both the fall and spring semester.  By signing up for this contest, you accept a one-year commitment.  More specifics about the contest are enclosed in this packet.

There are two local websites used for the forecasting contest.  The first website is the forecast entry page which can be found at http://apollo.lsc.vsc.edu/ams/fcstcon.  This site is only used for entering your forecasts. The second page is a place where forecasters can find in depth weather information about each of the forecast cities. This page can be found at http://apollo.lsc.vsc.edu/ams/ncwfcinfo.html. This page will be updated when need or when specific information is requested by the forecasters themselves.

This year, the AMS & NWA Club has decided to award prizes to the person(s) who provided the best forecast for each city. There will be two winners (one from the upper classman group and one from the lower classman group) from LSC, at the end of each city, who will be award money off from the storm conference. In addition, a grand prize winner will be award to the best overall LSC forecaster.

As you will see, missing forecasts hurts not only the individual, but the team as well.  There will be a large effort to make sure that all forecasters that have signed up will continue to forecast throughout the year.  Plus, forecasters with many absences will be disqualified from receiving an award for a city and the grand prize. Please, make your best effort to consistently forecast so that our team can be successful!

Thank you for taking part in the forecasting contest. It's an excellent way of learn how to forecast. If you have any comments, concerns or suggestions, please let me know.  You can contact me at Andrew.Little@lyndonstate.edu or by phone at X6570.

Enjoy,

Andrew C. Little
Vice President, LSC AMS & NWA
